Pasco libraries woo teens with battle of the bands

By Helen Anne Travis, Times Staff Writer

Crashing cymbals. Rock guitar. Heavy metal lyrics.

Welcome to your local library.

This week Pasco County libraries kick off the online component of their annual Rockus Maximus battle of the bands competition. Each week, the libraries will debut a new video featuring the eight competing bands participating in interviews, promoting causes and playing prerecorded gigs in the library.

Voters have until the week of the big concert showdown next month at Crews Lake Park in Shady Hills to decide which band has the best online presence.

Expiry, a pop-punk band from Lehigh Acres, traveled four hours to Hudson to film a gig at the library last month.

The band jammed out in the young adult section.

"It's kind of funny that we're allowed to play music in a library where normally people would shush you," Expiry guitarist Chase Keenan, 18, said.

Funny, but necessary, said Paul Stonebridge, 31, libraries teen services manager who helps run the competition (This year's theme: "We Ain't Dead Yet … ").

"Libraries are not going to stay alive if they're just about books," he said. "We have to stay relevant and meaningful to all age groups in order to exist."

The libraries started the battle of the bands 13 years ago in an effort to reach the local youth demographic. In 2008, they tapped into the growing social networking movement with promotions on myspace.com and youtube.com.

Stonebridge calls it "library 2.0."

An episode with a different theme will be posted online each week until the March 26 concert. Band members — mostly high school students or recent graduates — answer questions like "Who is the diva in the group?" and "If one of you had to lose an arm, who would it be and why?"

Bands promote social causes like VH1's Save the Music or antidrug groups. They participate in challenges in which members have to eat a beet juice and sardine milkshake or try to pick their friends' noses.

"They didn't have to eat it, of course," Stonebridge said.

The shows are a hit. The first year, more than 7,000 voters logged in from around the world and the concert attendance tripled to 600 spectators.

Afterward, nearly twice as many kids showed up for the library's teen programs. In the months around the competition, Stonebridge said, 12 percent more teens signed up for library cards — required for admission to the battle of the bands showdown.

Who knew rock music would get kids to the library?

"I think it's kind of capturing the youthful idea of rebellion in a way," said Aaron Meekcoms, 20, the guitar player for Clearwater classic rock band WD-HAN, which is participating in the event.

"It's like with little kids when you hide the vegetables in something delicious," Stonebridge said.

Last month, the concert's success over the years nabbed the library system the John Cotton Dana Award, one of the most coveted national awards given by the American Library Association.

Bands from outside the county were invited to participate for the first time this year. Stonebridge said the goal is to make the concert a regional, maybe even statewide or national, event.

Helen Anne Travis can be reached at htravis@sptimes.com or (813) 435-7312.

This article has been revised to reflect the following correction: WD-HAN is one of the bands participating in Pasco libraries' battle of the bands. The band name was misspelled in the original version of this story.

"Local Band WD-Han Releases First Album"

Tampa Bay rock band WD-Han (which stands for “We Don’t Have A Name”) released their album Class Project Earth to a full house at Pangea CafĂ© in Downtown Clearwater on December 4th.

WD-Han's Class Project Earth gives a more extended look into the bands music. The songs have a place for everyone as they're a solid mix of a great set of genres. From rock to classic rock, blues to funk this album is a roller coaster of sound, emotion and communication.

An acoustic act with Steve Valtin and Jessica Greenwood opened the show at Pangea and set the atmosphere and by the time they ended, everyone was ready for the band who "doesn't have a name." With nearly 90 people at the show, the professionalism and enthusiasm was a refreshing look at what live music should be.

WD-Han played a full hour of originals, covers (Jet, Jimi Hendrix and Third Eye Blind to name a few) and even combinations of both. They were interactive with the audience, telling jokes on top of playing great music.

EP - Extended Play - A CD with 3-7 songs on it designed to give you the taste of a band. This is called an extended play because it is one step up from a Single (which has 1-2 songs on it), and thus give a more extended look into the bands music.

LP - Long Play - A long play CD is a full album. It is designed to fully capture that bands period of growth. It can have as many songs as the band desires. HISTORY: LP's were originally all vinyl records that only spun at 331/2 revolutions per minute.)

"Rockstar Status" an Interview with Forrest

How did you know when you achieved Rockstar Status?
Well lets be honest, that is a trick question isn't it? I mean, is there really just one level of Rockstar Status? No, there are literally thousands of Sub-Strata in that one word "Rockstar Status". So here is what I am going to do for you, I am going to re-write our question appropriately... "How did you know when you achieved the highest level of Rockstar Status ever?" and the answer to that question is, quite frankly, you just know.

What would you say WD-Han's Genre is?
Although not a trick question, that is almost as tough to respond to as the first question you asked. In order to fully answer that question, we must first dissect that which is WD-Han. Here are the components of WD-Hans Music:
-Guitar
-Drums
-Vocals
-Lead Guitar
-Back Up Vocals
-Occasional Piano and String Arrangements
-Bass lines that are brilliant beyond all comprehension
-Bass Shredding
-Extended Range Bass Playing
-Poly-phonic Octave Generated Bass tones

Looking at those components I would say our Genre would have to be RUSH TRIBUTE BAND give or take a Geddy Lee look-a-like.

Besides WD-Han, who is your favorite local rock band?

Do you consider yourself the greatest Bassist alive?
No most definitely not. I would never. Who do you think I am?

I think everyone else thinks I am, but I'm not that pretentious.

What is your favorite WD-Han Song?
Ahha, I can't tell you that, but I can tell you it will be released sometime this month.

Do you have anything else to say to your fans?
No

Well then, thank you for your time Forrest, it was great to have you!
Wait! Can I answer the last question, I wasn't really paying attention that was just my flash answer.
Sure, Go ahead
I think all of WD-Han's Fans deserve a great big pat on the back for sticking with us through shows like at the Pegasus Lounge, you guys are really, really great, and we wouldn't be able to do what we do without you! Thanks!

Rock on,

Fo (Babe)

Remember the State Theater show? Did you notice anything different that night...?

First off, for everyone who came to the State Theater show a big hearty thank you! I do realize that this was a few months ago, and seems a little random but bear with me. That show was so great for multiple reasons, a few are listed below.

1.) It was funny to be the only non-screamo/death metal band there.

2.) It was at the State Theater! A well-known venue, with a history of big name acts touring through and playing there.

3.) Everyone we love and all of our fans really came together for this show. We asked for your help and you responded in a BIG way by helping us sell so many tickets. This was not unrecognized and meant a lot to us.

4.) Something about the music that night, something about our playing was different....

Who noticed the fact that there was an extra person on the stage? Aaron Meekcoms played rhythm guitar that night and the sound expanded to another level.

That got everyone thinking...what about...what if...should Aaron be invited into the band?

Resounding: yes.

Would Aaron accept?

Confirmed.

Everyone please welcome to the band, new rhythm guitarist, Aaron Meekcoms!

Battle by the Sea

Marjorye informs me it's National Poetry Day, so here's one I wrote a while ago to celebrate!

Battle By The Sea

Crescent river smile sparkles 'cross plains dun

Sunshine world bathed in rays of brightest fun

Deep crows' feet lining the mounts' craggy face

Are the toll of millennia weathered in this place

On other days showers of tears and purest pain

Keep perfect time to this sad and windy refrain

Skies rent by brilliant flashes of rage and unrest

Prelude rumbling screams 'midst the tempest

Yet, morn' comes with a chance to start anew

Those piercing blue skies just take in the view

Of all that is below them, what they have done

Amends now made upon the return of the sun

Cal's Favorite Guitar Album(s) of the Moment

Hello all! I've been thinking of posting every so often an album or song that I really dig. I've been thinking of maybe doing a top 3 but for the first ever "Cal's Favorite Guitar Album(s) of the Moment" I will post 1 of my all-time favorite albums. It's by one of my favorite guitarists (he's in my top 3).

The album of the moment is: Dire Straits / Making Movies. The Track Listing is: Tunnel of Love, Romeo and Juliet, Skateaway, Exspresso Love, Hand in Hand, Solid Rock, Les Boys.

If you haven't heard it, go buy it right now. Seriously. If you have heard it, lay back and play it loud.

I will also post my top 5 or so favorite bands/in a perfect world they would be in a band. Check back every so often for posts regarding that. Exciting!

WD-Han's ADD (Acronym Dictionary Delux)

EP - Extended Play - A CD with 3-7 songs on it designed to give you the taste of a band. This is called an extended play because it is one step up from a Single (which has 1-2 songs on it), and thus give a more extended look into the bands music.

WD-Han - We Don't Have A Name - We don't need one...our music says enough.

SRV - Stevie Ray Vaughan - Guitar Legend. Huge influence of Cal, Spencer, Forrest and Lea. ---------------->

STSF - Street Team Street Fight - This is what happens when two street team members (band supporters) get in an arguement over who's the best WD-Han band member. When this occurs one must declare, "STREET TEAM STREET FIGHT!" at which point both members run to the street and assume their fighting possitions.

TGBE - The Greatest Band Ever - WD-Han

Color of Friend lyrics!

Have you heard the latest version of Color of Friend? No? Well, now is your chance!

http://www.myspace.com/wdhan

ALSO, to enhance your listening pleasure, here are the lyrics to Color of Friend!

----------------------------
Let me tell you a story,
About a girl I know.
Yeah I’m a tell you,
About a fox I know.

Brunette and beautiful,
She’s my muse.
Wants to be my friend,
It was all a ruse.
Yeahhh, no, no, no.

I’m just the color of friend, yeah.
Way down in my soul.
I’m turnin’ blue, blue, blue and that’s the way it goes.

Here comes the weekend,
No place to go.
My baby left me,
No luck no more.

Brunette and beautiful,
She’s my muse.
Wants to be my friend,
It was all a ruse.
Yeahhh, no, no, no.

I’m just the color of friend, yeah.
Way down in my soul.
I’m turnin’ blue, blue, blue and that’s the way it goes.

I said, yeahhhhh,
She said, noooo,
I said, baby please don’t go.

I’m just the color of friend, yeah.
----------------------------

ENJOY!
